Pile and soil testing

Static and dynamic tests

The following methods are used for field testing of soils by piles:

  • dynamic loading;
  • static compressive, pull-out, or horizontal loading.

Dynamic load testing involves measuring the relationship between the number of hammer blows and the pile penetration depth.

Static load testing involves determining the relationship between pile settlement and the load applied to it.

A test setup for soil testing by piles under static compressive, pull-out, or horizontal loads must include:

  1. a pile loading device, such as jacks or calibrated weights;
  2. a supporting structure for resisting reaction forces, such as a system of beams or trusses with anchor piles and/or a loading platform;
  3. a device for measuring pile displacement during testing, such as a reference system equipped with measuring instruments.

For field testing of soils under dynamic loads using full-scale piles, the same equipment used for pile driving is applied.

Field pile testing

Field testing of piles is carried out to verify that their load-bearing capacity complies with the design loads adopted in the pile foundation project.

The load-bearing capacity of piles, or their ability to withstand external loads, may be determined by the following methods: static pile testing, dynamic pile testing, soil testing, and others.

KGS-Astana LLP carries out the following types of tests, for example:

1. Pre-design and control testing of piles under static and dynamic loads using its own equipment;

2. Plate load testing of soils to determine the deformation modulus;

3. Pile integrity testing and determination of pile length, and others.
